Asbestos-related illnesses are caused by asbestos exposure, inhalation of asbestos fibres that damage the lungs and pleura.
Asbestos-related illnesses can manifest themselves in a variety of ways.
Asbestosis, pleural plaques, pleural effusion, diffuse pleural thickening, and rounded atelectasis are examples of non-malignant (non-
cancerous) diseases, while lung cancer and mesothelioma are examples of malignant (cancerous) diseases.
Who is at the greatest risk of contracting an asbestos-related disease?
Anyone who has worked in jobs that exposed them to a lot of asbestos dust is at a higher risk of acquiring an asbestos-related illness.
Traders, industrial employees, miners, shipbuilders, and construction workers will all be affected.
Because these workers’ work gear is polluted with asbestos particles, their families are also in danger.
People living near industries that manufactured asbestos-containing products, ancient structures in degradation, or buildings on fire that
contained ACMs, for example, are in danger of asbestos exposure.
This is due to the release of asbestos fibres into the atmosphere, which may cause health issues in the future, including asbestos-related
illnesses.
Because asbestos was so widespread before the asbestos prohibition in 2000 and was utilised in so many common construction
materials, asbestos is likely to be found in many older structures built before that time.
When does asbestos pose a threat to one’s health?
When asbestos is disturbed, such as during home DIY or renovation tasks, it poses a health danger.
The small threads, which are undetectable to the human eye, enter the upper and lower respiratory tracts after a person inhales asbestos
fibres in the air.
According to scientific research, not all of these fibres will enter the lungs, but those that do can stay there for years before causing
issues.
The immune system of the lungs will ultimately try to reject these small asbestos particles, resulting in inflammation and cell and tissue
damage.
This can eventually develop into one of the asbestos-related illnesses, such as fibrosis or malignant disease, if left untreated for a long
time.
Some asbestos fibres that have entered the lungs may move to the pleural and peritoneal regions.
Asbestos exposure can result in four different forms of pleural abnormalities known as “benign” pleural abnormalities:

Because the pleura is more susceptible to asbestos fibres than the lungs, people who are only exposed to a small amount of asbestos
are at risk of developing pleural illnesses.
Plaques in the pleura
Pleural plaques are the most common asbestos-related illness, affecting up to 58 percent of those who have been exposed to asbestos.
Pleural plaques are tiny areas of thickening of the parietal pleura, and in rare cases, the visceral pleura, that appear 20-40 years after
exposure.
They generally seem white or pale yellow and are located on the chest wall, the diaphragm, and the mediastinal pleura.
Pleural plaques come in a variety of sizes and numbers, and are usually asymptomatic.
Pleural plaques are not precancerous and are usually detected using a chest x-ray or CT scan.
Pleural thickening with a diffuse pattern
Diffuse pleural thickening is defined as a fibrous thickening of the visceral pleura that is not confined, with regions of adhesion to the
parietal pleura and obliteration of the pleural space.
Fibrotic regions including costophrenic angles, apices, lung bases, and interlobar fissures can extend over an entire lobe or lung.
The thickness can range from less than 1 mm to more than 1 cm.
A CT scan may generally show fibrous strands spreading into the lung parenchyma from the enlarged pleura.
Pleural plaques frequently coexist with diffuse pleural thickening, although pleural plaques are more prevalent on their own.
Shortness of breath and chest discomfort are among the symptoms of this asbestos-related illness, but most individuals are very
moderately affected.
Early indications of diffuse pleural thickening can be detected using CT scans.
A continuous sheet of pleural thickening more than 5 cm broad, measuring more than 8 cm in craniocaudal extension, and more than 3
mm thick, is diagnosed as diffuse pleural thickening.
Following asbestos exposure, an accumulation of fluid between the two pleural layers is known as benign asbestos pleural effusion.
This asbestos-related illness, which is one of the less frequent of the asbestos-related diseases, generally manifests itself within 10 years
after first exposure.
The illness usually has no symptoms, although patients may feel discomfort, fever, or shortness of breath.
The symptoms of widespread pleural thickening may develop.
Atelectasis with a rounded shape
The infolding of thickened visceral pleura with collapse of the intervening lung parenchyma causes rounded atelectasis (also known as
Blesovsky’s or folded lung syndrome).
It is the least frequent of the benign pleural illnesses caused by asbestos.
Although asbestos exposure is the most common cause of the disease, it can also be caused by other medical problems.
It’s a long-term illness that’s generally asymptomatic.
Asbestosis is one of the most prevalent asbestos-related illnesses.
Asbestosis is a long-term lung illness characterised by scarring of lung tissue induced by prolonged exposure to high amounts of
asbestos.
The signs of asbestos illness might take up to 15 years to manifest.
The lining of the lungs thickens as a result of scar tissue, producing shortness of breath in patients.
The disorder has been linked to cancer and an increased risk of heart disease.
Cancerous illnesses caused by asbestos
Mesothelioma
The most aggressive of the asbestos-related illnesses is malignant mesothelioma.
It’s an incurable cancer that’s the only one known to be caused directly by asbestos exposure.
Peritoneal mesothelioma is the second most prevalent form, accounting for up to 20% of cases.
Because mesothelioma has such a lengthy latency period, symptoms may not appear for 20 to 50 years after the original asbestos
exposure.
Shortness of breath, a persistent cough, chronic chest discomfort, and weight loss are all frequent signs of mesothelioma.
A biopsy of the patient is required to confirm a definitive diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma.
The majority of people diagnosed with mesothelioma die within a year of their diagnosis.
Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and multimodality treatment are among options for treating this disease.
One such factor is asbestos exposure.
Asbestos is believed to be responsible for 3% to 8% of all lung cancer cases.
Lung cancer is more likely among workers who have been exposed to asbestos and also smoke.
Chronic cough, dyspnea, chest discomfort, wheezing, coughing up blood, tiredness, and weight loss are all common signs of lung cancer.
Because survival rates are dismal, with only 15% of patients living for five years after diagnosis, it’s critical to catch the condition early.
